He was born on 15 January 1889 and educated at Mercers' School, London and Trinity Hall, Cambridge.〔"Who was Who" 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991. ISBN 0-7136-3457-X.〕 Ordained in 1912,〔"The Clergy List" London, Kelly’s, 1913.〕 his first post was as Chaplain of Jesus College, Cambridge a period interrupted by World War I service as a Chaplain to the Forces (during which time he was Mentioned in Despatches). Later he was Vice-Principal of Westcott House, Cambridge then Dean of Pembroke College, Cambridge until his ordination to the episcopate as the Bishop of Ely.〔(Cambridgeshire — Historical Timeline 17 — 1900–1999 ), (Cambridgeshire Genealogy )〕〔(Bishops of Ely ), (GENUKI: UK & Ireland Genealogy )〕 He died on 12 August 1956.〔'Obituary Dr. H.
